North Korea test fires missiles in wake of Kim Jong Il’s death
Kim Jong-Il’s son, Kim Jong-Un takes power, dubbed “great successor”
North Korea test fires short-range missiles after Kim Jong Il’s death
Shortly after the announcement of Kim Jong Il’s death, the North Korean military test fired two short-range missiles from the capital city of Pyongyang. The response came immediately after South Korea put its military on alert following the death of North Koreas “dear leader” Kim Jong Il.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency claims two South Korean military officials couldn’t immediately confirm the report because it would breach the country’s military intelligence protocol. The North frequently conducts short-range missile tests, and although North Korea claims the testing does not coincide with Kim Jong Il’s death, but there may be many people who believe otherwise.
For some time now North Korea has been testing its KN-06 missile, a updated version of the KN-01 and KN-02 ground-to-ground missiles. The missiles are estimated to have a 72 mile range.
North Korea is urging its people to rally behind Kim Jong Il’s son, Kim Jong Un. But as the world sits back and watches the story develop, tensions and questions of instability in the region begin to rise.
Not much is known about Kim Jong Un, not even his age. Many speculate the young general was born in 1984 and may be 27 years old, but so far this has not been confirmed. Reports say he was educated in Switzerland, speaks multiple languages including English and German, and bears a striking resemblance to North Korea’s founder, Kim Il Sung.
Experts say Kim Jong Un is likely to follow in the footsteps of his father maintaining a strong grip over one of the largest armies in the world while pressing on with a nuclear weapons program that has the international community outraged.
